What is Camp out for Concern?

Standing in solidarity with displaced families around the world

Our fundraising challenge shines a light on the stories of millions of families forced from their homes now living in tents, cities, or displacement camps, where each day brings the harsh realities of hunger, disease, and the fight to survive. According to recent figures by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) at least 118 million of the world’s population are currently forcibly displaced.

Could you sleep outside for just one night to show that you care about this cause?

Choose your challenge

Whether you take part on your own, with family, or as a group, you can shape this challenge in a way that works for you. Choose a location, pack a tent and some simple supplies and spend one night under the stars in solidarity with those who have been forced to flee their home.

Camp Out for Concern

Sleep out in solidarity with families displaced by conflict - and help provide shelter, safety, and hope for those forced from their homes.

From July to September, we are asking you to give up your home comforts for just one night and sleep under the stars to stand with the one in 67 individuals worldwide who have been forced to flee their homes. From Sudan to Somalia, Yemen to the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Gaza, we are standing with families displaced by conflict - delivering urgent support, care and protection.

What is life like in a refugee camp?

While the vast majority of refugees (78% according to the UNHCR) are hosted in cities, that still leaves approximately 9.5 million refugees living in camps around the world.

“For me, I find that sometimes only hearing statistics and numbers about how many people are displaced from their homes is hard to actually understand. However, Camp for Concern is an absolutely eye-opening experience. You not only learn and see what these people go through, but you get to live through it. In this camp I grew to understand that whilst for me this was a camp; for some people it is their whole life. It really makes you delve deep down and realise the privilege that we have by simply being born here and not into someone else's situation. This experience truly increases your understanding and helps you to empathise with the millions and millions of people who find themselves displaced from their home. Inspiring and motivating everyone who attends, it is the perfect starting point on a road to advocacy and humanitarian work.”

In a displacement camp in Lahj, one mother told me, ‘Children suffer from malnutrition and diseases; they eat whatever is on the plate; those who have lunch don’t have dinner, and those who have breakfast don’t have lunch.’

  • £5 could pay for a warm blanket for displaced families who have no choice but to live in tents and shelters. 

  • £50 could provide 14-day emergency food supplies to two families. 

  • £187 could provide one displaced family with short-term safe shelter.
