Myanmar earthquake – millions in need of safe shelter, food, clean water and medical care as over 3,085 people are confirmed dead.

On Friday 28 March Myanmar was struck by a powerful 7.7. magnitude earthquake - the strongest to hit the country in decades.

Minutes later, a second earthquake hit, followed by a series of aftershocks. Vital infrastructure has been destroyed with the tremors being so strong that they were felt hundreds of miles away in Thailand and China.

Millions have been left without access to safe shelter, food, clean water and medical care. Over 3,085 people have died, and thousands are trapped beneath the rubble. 1.2 million people have been displaced and families are sleeping outside in fear of further aftershocks.

The humanitarian needs are immense.

Myanmar was already facing a severe humanitarian crisis after years of ongoing conflict and instability. A third of the population was in need of humanitarian aid. Now the situation is catastrophic.

Millions of people in Myanmar have been left without access to safe shelter, food, clean water and medical care. With roads, networks and power lines destroyed, we are in a race against time to reach those in need.

Our partner charities in the Disaster Emergency Committee (DEC) have worked in Myanmar for decades and have trusted local partners rooted in the affected communities. Thanks to this, we have been able to mobilise quickly to begin to reach those in need. The kindness of people like you will mean that we can scale up our response to reach those who need us.

More funds will allow DEC charities to save more lives. Please donate now.
