Sudan Emergency Response

Single donation
£38 could go towards providing a kit of essential items for a displaced family to help them survive, including sleeping mats, hygiene kits, mosquito nets and more.

The hunger crisis in Sudan is accelerating, with evidence of famine in one of the largest displacement sites in North Darfur. An estimated 755,000 people in the Zamzam camp and North Darfur region are facing famine-like conditions.

Millions of people have fled their homes due to conflict in Sudan. Hostilities between rival armed factions in Sudan have left 7.9 million people internally displaced, and forced 2.1 million people to seek refuge in neighbouring countries, like Chad. These people urgently need your help today.

Severe food insecurity

Right now, almost half Sudan’s population – that’s 25 million people – are facing severe food insecurity, with over 8.5 million people at emergency levels and 755,000 people in IPC Phase 5 – the most serious. Approximately 729,000 Sudanese children are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, the deadliest form of hunger.

The needs will only worsen as communities face displacement and lack of food, water, shelter and sanitation.

Seeking refuge

For those who have sought refuge in neighbouring countries, the journey to safety has been harrowing. Bahar*, pictured above, was forced to separate from his wife Arafa* and their two sons while on their journey from Sudan to Chad. They did not know if they would ever find each other again.

When they arrived in Chad exhausted and hungry, they were met by Concern staff who provided them with much-needed food and essential items such as sleeping mats, jerry cans and mosquito nets. The family has thankfully been reunited and thanks to the kindness of Concern's supporters has the basic items they need to survive.

Your donation can help

Concern’s teams are working with communities in Sudan, providing health and nutrition services for women and children.

  • We are supplying and supporting 57 clinics and running seven mobile clinics, which have treated over 11,000 malnourished children under the age of five
  • We are repairing water infrastructure at healthcare clinics
  • We are procuring and distributing food, including cereals, pulses, dried vegetables and cooking oil
  • Essential items such as mosquito nets, blankets, solar lamps, soap, jerry cans and sanitary pads are being provided to families

Our teams are also responding along the Chad and South Sudan borders, where over 1.3 million people have crossed since the conflict began. Many are arriving sick, traumatised and with just the clothes on their backs.

  • In Chad, we are working with displaced people and with local host communities to provide water, sanitation and hygiene services, healthcare and nutrition support
  • Local clinics are being supported in screening for and treating malnutrition, providing pre-natal and post-natal consultations, and vaccination services
  • In South Sudan, our teams are screening people for malnutrition and providing access to clean water
  • They are also providing cash assistance so people can purchase food and meet other needs

Funds raised in response to this appeal will go towards Concern's work in Sudan and Chad. For every £1 you donate, we will allocate 10p of your donation to cover general support and running costs. There is a small chance that we will raise more money than is needed for this appeal. If this happens, we'll spend any additional funds on other Concern programmes - wherever the need is greatest.
