In southern coastal Bangladesh lies a district called Bagerhat. Here resides a 25-year-old young man called Esanuel. However, Esanuel is not your typical 25-year-old.

Parts of the world are feeling the effects of climate change dramatically more than others. One such country is Bangladesh. However, despite climate disasters ripping houses, livelihoods, and lives apart, communities in certain regions of the country are joining together, piecing back their lives and actively adapting to what is sadly now, the new normal.  

Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change in the world. However, its communities, with the help of Concern, are defying the odds with climate-smart techniques that allow them to grow nutritious food, whatever the weather. 

Earlier in 2023, we met a number of women who had received this training and have, quite literally, grown their way into a secure future with climate resilient farming.   

The Global Gender Gap Index (GGGI) is an annual report produced by the World Economic Forum (WEF) that measures gender-based gaps in access to resources and opportunities in countries around the world. It is the longest-standing index which tracks progress towards closing these gaps over time since its inception in 2006.

The cycle of poverty refers to a self-perpetuating pattern in which individuals or families experience poverty and find it difficult to escape from it. It involves a combination of economic, social, and psychological factors that create barriers and keep people trapped in poverty across generations.

At 4.17am on February 6, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Türkiye (Turkey) and Syria. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives and more than 50,000 buildings were reduced to rubble. As a member of the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC), we launched a joint appeal, raising over £100 million. This is where that money has gone.

East Africa is the epicentre of one of the world’s worst climate emergencies, having recently experienced one of the longest and most severe droughts on record. Yet, while rains have finally arrived, the humanitarian crisis is far from over.
