Right now there are almost 26 million refugees around the world, whose lives have been turned upside down by war, conflict and natural disasters. At Concern we’re marking Refugee Week by celebrating the contributions and resilience of the families we are working with.
What is Refugee Week?
Refugee Week takes place every year around World Refugee Day (20 June) and will run this year from the 15 – 21 June.
The initiative started in the UK in 1998, in response to hostility towards refugees and asylum seekers from the media and society in general. Over two decades later, Refugee Week is now a globally recognised festival that celebrates the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees through a programme of arts, cultural and educational events. This year the festival will take place digitally – you can find out more about what’s going on by visiting https://refugeeweek.org.uk/.
Refugee Week aims to bring about positive encounters between different communities, helping them connect and learn from each other.
What's the theme for 2020?
The theme of Refugee Week this year is ‘Imagine’. Even before the coronavirus pandemic hit, the climate crisis, political division, rapid technological change and ongoing conflicts around the world all meant the future was unclear - not least for the millions of people across the globe who have been forced to flee their homes.
Now in the era of Covid-19, the call to imagine a better future feels more important than ever.
