Cuts to the UK aid budget will have devastating consequences
On February 25, 2025 the UK government announced cuts to Official Development Assistance funding, dropping the overseas aid budget to 0.3% of GNI.
Sayyeda Salam, Executive Director of Concern Worldwide (UK) said:
"We are shocked by today’s decision to the UK’s aid budget. At a time of increased need around the world we need more compassion and kindness, not decisions that will have devastating and deadly consequences for people who already live in extreme poverty.
In 2020, the UK slashed aid from 0.7% of GNI to 0.5% so this is a cut on top of a cut, which is grossly unfair. As a humanitarian organisation, Concern believes the UK government has a role to play and must act to protect those experiencing extreme hunger, poverty, and displacement due to circumstances beyond their control."
